The change was not merely architectural: it shows how the same place could change function as communities, needs and ways of using available resources changed.

Bétera is located 15 kilometres from Valencia and 14 kilometres from the Mediterranean, in a position bordering the Valencian farmland. This location placed the settlement close to agricultural territory and, according to the available historical information, water was one of its main characteristics.

The preserved irrigation channel provides concrete evidence. It is not merely a matter of imagining that the Roman inhabitants needed water: a structure built to convey it remains. The infrastructure makes it possible to relate the settlement to an organized management of the resource, although the available sources do not specify the channel’s complete route or all the crops associated with it.

Geology helps explain why water could play this role. The geotechnical study of Bétera identifies carbonate formations—limestones, dolostones and marbles—as an important part of the terrain and describes, in certain sectors, aquifers that are generally extensive, highly permeable and productive. Put simply, these are materials that can allow the circulation and storage of groundwater, like a large-scale sponge made of fractured rock, although conditions are not exactly the same at every point in the municipality.

The relationship between these materials and the Roman villa must be stated cautiously. No study has been provided demonstrating that water from that specific aquifer directly supplied the site’s irrigation channel. It can be said that the presence of farmland rich in water and a Roman irrigation channel is compatible with a territory where the availability of surface or groundwater made it possible to sustain agricultural and domestic activities.

When the baths changed professions

Roman baths were not simply ornamental rooms. They formed part of an architectural complex that required water, maintenance and an organization capable of sustaining specialized facilities. Their later transformation into an olive press reveals a practical operation: preserving a built space and giving it a different productive purpose.

The conversion took place in the mid-fifth century, when the Visigoths transformed the villa into a farm. The sources in the dossier explicitly state that the baths were converted into an olive press. This fact connects the architecture with a specific agricultural activity, oil production, and shows how the settlement adapted to a different economy without disappearing entirely.

The change also alters the way the ruins are read. Where a Roman villa had once concentrated residential and bathing spaces, the new community found a usable structure for processing farm produce. The pottery found at the site confirms that materials corresponding to both periods of occupation were present. This is not an unbroken continuity, nor proof that the population and customs remained the same. More modestly, it is the material trace of two different phases at the same point in the territory.

The landscape that sustains a long occupation

The case of the Roman villa is not an isolated episode of human presence in Bétera. The earliest documented inhabitants date back to the sixth century BC, and the municipality preserves Iberian archaeological remains, including a wall with streets and houses inside it. Later, the farmland accommodated the Roman villa and then the Visigothic farm. Each stage had its own reasons, but water appears as a particularly visible condition at the Roman site.

Arab remains also exist within the municipality, such as Bofilla Tower, associated with an ancient alquería that originated in the eleventh century. The available documentation does not allow us to state that its location responded exactly to the same water-capture system as the Roman villa’s, or that there was a direct continuity between the two communities. It does, however, reveal a territorial constant: Bétera formed part of a space in which the relationships between settlement, agriculture and water were of decisive importance.

Subsurface information provides additional context. The boreholes compiled in the geotechnical study show variable depths before reaching different materials and water levels, meaning that the ground cannot be reduced to a single uniform layer. Fine sands and silts are also identified, along with subordinate clays and formations of sandstone, conglomerates and flysch. These data do not by themselves describe the life of the villa, but they remind us that the farmland rests on a combination of materials and water flows, not on a geologically indifferent surface.

The importance of the Roman villa of Bétera lies not only in the discovery of walls or pottery. It lies in the sequence of uses preserved at the site: a villa with baths, a Visigothic farm and an olive press installed in those same structures. The irrigation channel adds the infrastructure connecting the settlement with the farmland, while geology provides the physical framework that makes the availability of water understandable.

When you look at Bétera’s territory today, you can read that transformation without reducing it to a list of remains. The farmland was not merely the space surrounding a villa; it was the resource that allowed a Roman building to find a second productive life. And the former olive press reminds us that when a society changes, the function of an architectural structure can also change without the place ceasing to be useful.
