Types of ground in Province of Tarragona

The province of Tarragona, located in the north-eastern region of Catalonia, has a geographical diversity that directly influences the characterisation of its soils, fundamental for geotechnical studies. The surface includes coastal areas, inland zones and the mountainous region of Els Ports, with reliefs that vary from flat to steep.

In the comarcas of Camp de Tarragona and Terres de l'Ebre, soils typical of flat and alluvial areas predominate, with phyllites, sands and silts, suitable for applications in stability studies and foundations. The mountainous region, especially in Els Ports and the inland areas, features land of a rocky and gneiss character, which requires specific analyses for resistant foundations and a support structure in ground of high difficulty.

In areas close to the coast, such as Salou and Cambrils, alluvial and sandy soils, with high permeability, influence drainage and stability aspects. Variability in soil types, together with the region’s typical climatic conditions, makes a detailed study essential in order to design efficient geotechnical solutions, ensuring the safety and durability of the structures proposed in the province.
