Types of ground in Catalonia
The province of Barcelona, located in the north-east of Catalonia, has a geographical diversity that affects soil characteristics and, therefore, the geotechnical assessment. The region is made up mainly of alluvial plains in the Llobregat and Besòs river basins, with sedimentary substrates deposited by recent fluvial processes, ideal for foundation studies in urban and peri-urban areas.
The comarcas of Maresme and Vallès present silty-sandy and clayey soils, with variable levels of compaction and plasticity, requiring specific analyses to determine the bearing capacity and the stability of future structures. The presence of granitic ground, in areas such as Berguedà, introduces challenges in assessing strength and susceptibility to differential movements—critical aspects in foundation and stability studies.
In the interior, mountainous relief areas such as the comarca of Cerdanya predominate, with rocky soils and steep slopes, conditioning the planning of works and geotechnical risk analyses. The heterogeneity of the territory in Catalonia, with its varied geological composition, requires detailed studies to assess the feasibility of construction or infrastructure projects, adapting to the specific characteristics of each area.
Limestones, Dolomites and Marbles
karstic structures (caves, sinkholes, dolines) that pose the main geotechnical risk.

Sandstones, Conglomerates and Flysch
Sedimentary rocks formed by the cementation of fragments of other pre-existing rocks. They include sandstones (cemented sand), conglomerates (cemented gravels) and the rhythmic alternation of sandston

Overconsolidated clays and marls (Duras)
Cohesive soils with a hard feel, sometimes with a rock-like appearance when dry (grey marls, pre-Pyrenean facies, deep Guadalquivir basin). They have a long history of geological compression in the pa

Granite, gneiss and igneous rocks
Igneous and metamorphic rocks with very high mechanical strength. They form the most competent and stable substrate. They predominate in the Sistema Central, in Galicia, and in outcrops of the Hercyni

Area corresponding to rivers, lakes, reservoirs, lagoons, permanent marshes or submerged coastal strips. The point consulted lies on a body of water identified cartographically by the IGME in its geol

Gypsum, Anhydrite and Salts
Chemically formed sedimentary rocks produced by the precipitation of minerals dissolved in closed basins. Gypsum predominates (calcium sulphate) and, to a lesser extent, anhydrite and salts (halite).

Fine sands and silts
Fine to very fine granular soils with medium to loose compacity. Typical of floodplains and coastlines. Although they can support light buildings, they are treacherous soils linked to water processes:
