Types of ground in Medina de Pomar
In Medina de Pomar, limestone, dolomites and marbles predominate as substrate materials, present in more than 60% of the municipality. These rock types provide competent and generally stable ground for foundations, with good bearing capacity, although the occasional presence of sandstones, conglomerates and loose materials should be examined to avoid areas of lower consolidation or sudden changes in geotechnical behaviour. The marginal presence of fine sands, silts and gravels indicates that, except in very localised areas, direct support on loose soils will be exceptional. The dominant trend towards low-permeability formations also limits the risk of significant differential settlements due to the washing out of fines.
Seismicity in Medina de Pomar is very low, with only 5 recorded events in the last three decades and a maximum magnitude of 3.2, so it does not appreciably affect structural design. However, particular attention should be paid to the possible presence of karstification in the limestones and dolomites, as the formation of cavities can critically affect the stability of foundations; before executing any work, thorough verification of the possible karst in the subsoil is essential. As no expansive clays are found, expansivity does not pose a risk in the area, with karst being the main factor to consider in any geotechnical study in this municipality.
