Types of ground in María
In the municipality of María, limestone, dolomites and marbles predominate as the substrate. These are high-strength rock formations with excellent bearing characteristics for direct foundations. In turn, although to a lesser extent, fine sands, silts and certain overconsolidated clays or marls also occur; these materials can increase local geotechnical heterogeneity. The generally low permeability favours stability, although there are specific aquifers that may influence excavation and drainage projects. Using the rock formations as a support plane usually provides a solid and reliable base, making them suitable for shallow foundations provided that the continuity and quality of the rock mass are verified.
Seismic activity in María is considered moderate, with 13 recorded events over the last thirty years and a maximum magnitude of 3.3; a low magnitude that does not compromise the usual structural design for the area. The presence of karst is significant within the municipal term, so it is essential to check for cavities and conduits before executing any foundation work, as these can pose a risk of localised settlements or collapses. The absence of a clayey substrate rules out the risk of expansivity, with the main factor to take into account being the possible presence of karst features within the carbonate formations.
