Types of ground in Girona Province
The province of Girona, located in the north-eastern region of Catalonia, presents a variety of geographical and territorial characteristics that significantly influence geotechnical studies.
In general, the territory is characterised by mountainous areas in the Prelitoral Range, especially in the comarcas of the Garrotxa and the Vall de Bianya, where granitic and feldspathic soils predominate. There are resistant rocks, but the presence of fragmented materials can affect stability. In areas close to the coast, such as the Costa Brava, sandy and sandy-calcareous soils predominate, with high permeability and a lower capacity to retain water.
The inland areas, such as La Selva and Les Guilleries, feature clayey and silty soils in flat areas, which may require special attention in ground stabilisation and drainage. The territorial diversity, from mountainous areas to valleys and coastal plains, requires a detailed approach in geotechnical studies to assess the ground’s bearing capacity, the possible risks of subsidence and compatibility with infrastructure projects.
Phyllites and schists
Metamorphic rocks characterised by their foliation (parallel planes of weakness or slaty cleavage). Very common in Galicia, Asturias, the north of León, Extremadura and Sierra Morena. They are highly
