Geotechnical study in Cuevas del Becerro

In Cuevas del Becerro, a substrate composed of limestones, dolomites and marbles predominates—hard rocks that provide good bearing capacity conditions for shallow foundations, except in areas where intense alterations or fracturing occur. Compact gravel and sand may be found locally, offering favourable options for shallow foundation design if they exhibit a good degree of compaction; in turn, the levels of sandstones, conglomerates and flysch, although less frequent, require specific characterisation to define the optimal support depth.

Seismicity is moderate, with 16 events in the last 30 years and a maximum magnitude of 3.7, so it does not present significant structural implications for conventional design. However, the presence of carbonate rocks implies the risk of karst processes, so it is essential to verify the existence of underground cavities before building, as these can seriously affect the stability of structures. Since the substrate is not clayey, the risk of expansivity is ruled out. Thus, detailed investigation of local karst is the main constraint in the geotechnical planning for the area.
