Geotechnical study in Cogollos de la Vega

In Cogollos de la Vega, the predominant ground conditions correspond to limestones, dolomites and marbles, together with significant outcrops of slates and schists. These materials, being for the most part competent, provide favourable bearing capacity for shallow foundations, although their low permeability may limit the disposal of surface waters. In localised areas, the occasional presence of fine sands and silts and the sporadic occurrence of muds or peats indicate points where shallow foundation would need to be avoided due to low support and possible differential settlements.

Since the subsoil is fundamentally non-clayey, there is no risk associated with expansive soils. However, the presence of carbonate materials such as limestones and dolomites makes it essential to carry out a detailed inspection of karstification processes before carrying out foundations, to rule out possible cavities or subsidences. Seismic activity in the municipality is high, with 200 events over 30 years, although its maximum magnitude is moderate (Mmax 3.8), which does not impose any singular structural constraints but does recommend considering them in general. The main constraint in Cogollos de la Vega will be prior verification of karst processes and the identification of areas with muds or peats in order to guarantee stability in the design of the supports.
