Geotechnical study in Carabaña

In Carabaña, the geological substratum is composed mainly of limestones, dolomites and marbles, together with a significant presence of sandstones and conglomerates. This lithological profile indicates good bearing capacity in most cases, which allows conventional shallow foundations to be designed, provided that competent levels are identified and areas of alteration or the presence of surface water are avoided. The high permeability of the aquifers and the ground’s productivity confirm effective drainage, but it is essential to check fluctuations in the water table, especially in areas close to water bodies.

Seismic activity in Carabaña is notable, with 82 recorded events over the last three decades, although with a maximum magnitude that is moderate at 3.1, which does not represent a severe structural constraint. It is important to note that the presence of carbonate materials requires checking for karstification before founding, given the potential risk of subsidence or cavities. As the substratum is non-clayey, the risk of expansivity is ruled out. Therefore, the main geotechnical constraint in the area lies in the possible occurrence of karst phenomena and the appropriate management of the aquifers.
