Geotechnical study in Riola

In Riola, the dominant subsoil is made up of fine sands and silts, accounting for more than 80% of the surface area, followed occasionally by white or soft expansive clays and small percentages of water bodies and compacted gravels. These characteristics favour a moderate bearing capacity; however, the areas where expansive clays are reported must be treated with caution during the foundation phase, selecting suitable solutions to control possible differential settlement. The predominant formations generally show low permeability, although the presence of shallow aquifers in specific points is not ruled out.

Seismic activity in Riola is moderate, with an average frequency of seismic events and a maximum recorded magnitude of 3.4, indicating a low risk level that does not require special measures in the usual structural design. The absence of risk from significant expansivity in the main subsoil and the lack of karst development mean that the main technical focus of geotechnical studies should be on the appropriate identification of areas with occasional deposits of soft clays and on controlling soil–water interaction at the least permeable levels.
