Types of ground in Province of Murcia
In the Province of Murcia, the subsoil is dominated by fine sands and silts, also frequently featuring carbonated formations such as limestones, dolomites and marbles. These materials generally provide an acceptable bearing capacity, although the presence of sands and silts may entail certain limitations for shallow foundations if they are not sufficiently compacted. Impermeable formations or those with low permeability favour the existence of surface aquifers, which is a relevant aspect for hydrogeotechnical studies prior to any intervention.
Although seismicity in the area is high, with 200 events over 30 years, the maximum recorded magnitude (Mmax 3.7) remains within low thresholds, so the influence of structural seismic activity may be considered controlled but not negligible. Verification of karst phenomena is also essential due to the significant presence of limestones and dolomites, since the existence of cavities could significantly affect the safety of foundations. The non-clayey substrate rules out risks of expansiveness, with the possible presence of karst standing out as the main conditioning factor.
Fine sands and silts
Fine to very fine granular soils with medium to loose compacity. Typical of floodplains and coastlines. Although they can support light buildings, they are treacherous soils linked to water processes:
