Geotechnical study in Olivella

In Olivella, the geological substrate is dominated by limestones, dolomites and marbles, high-strength rock materials that usually provide favourable bearing capacity for the direct foundation of buildings. Although these soils are generally formed in extensive, relatively compact formations, their low superficial permeability may be accompanied by the presence of deep aquifers, which means it is necessary to pay attention to any potential movements of groundwater when designing the foundation.

Seismicity in the area is moderate, with 17 events recorded over 30 years and a maximum magnitude of 2.3, so the seismic condition is not significant for normal structural design. However, as it is in a karstic environment, it is essential to verify the presence of cavities or underground conduits prior to foundation works, as these may undermine ground stability. Since the substrate is not clayey, the risk of expansivity is ruled out as a conditioning factor. The main focus should be on potential karstic developments when planning geotechnical interventions in Olivella.
