Geotechnical study in Canyelles

In Canyelles, the dominant substrate is formed by limestones, dolomites and marbles, accompanied in smaller proportions by high-hardness overconsolidated clays and marls. These lithologies provide an excellent bearing capacity, favouring direct foundation solutions except in specific areas where the marls predominate. The low near-surface permeability limits the risk of differential collapses, although at depth aquifers may exist that affect the choice of support depth and the inspection prior to excavation.

The seismic record indicates moderate seismicity with 10 events in 30 years and a low maximum magnitude (Mmax 1.7), which implies structural requirements that are not particularly demanding for this factor. Given the majority presence of limestones and dolomites, the existence of karst phenomena must be specifically verified before designing any foundation, as they can significantly affect ground stability. The non-clayey substrate rules out expansivity issues as the main conditioning factor, with the possible existence of karst cavities being the critical aspect to analyse in the geotechnical studies of the area.
