Types of ground in Mediona

In Mediona, calcareous substrates predominate, fundamentally limestones, dolomites and marbles, accompanied in smaller proportions by detrital materials such as sandstones and conglomerates, as well as certain gypsum and anhydrite formations. This type of soil usually offers good bearing capacity for shallow and deep foundations, provided that the continuity and stability of the bedrock mass are verified. The occasional presence of gypsum, anhydrite and salts may increase the risk of dissolution processes, making a thorough ground investigation essential and these materials unsuitable for use as a solid support level. The non-clayey substrate rules out concern regarding expansivity, thereby confirming the suitability of the ground against this phenomenon.

Seismicity in Mediona is very low, with only 7 recorded events over 30 years and a maximum magnitude of 2.5, which implies minimal seismic requirements in structural design. However, the predominantly calcareous nature of the subsoil requires that the existence of karstic cavities be ruled out or confirmed before any foundation is considered, since karst is the main local geotechnical constraint and its prior verification is essential in order to design safe foundations.
