Geotechnical study in Santa Maria de Palautordera

In Santa Maria de Palautordera, compact gravel and sand formations predominate, accounting for close to 70% of the subsoil. These offer a high bearing capacity and favour the design of shallow foundations. To a lesser extent, sandstones, conglomerates and flysch are present, as well as the occasional occurrence of granite and other igneous rocks, which provide additional stability and help minimise differential settlement. The general ground impermeability characteristics limit infiltration and may allow the presence of shallow aquifers, although their influence on foundation works is usually secondary.

Seismic activity in the area is very low, with only three recorded events over a period of 30 years and a low maximum magnitude. This means that the seismic risk in structural design is virtually nil. As the municipality’s bedrock is not clayey, the possibility of problems due to ground swell potential is ruled out. Thus, the main geotechnical parameter to be controlled will be the proper characterisation of the granular nature and the compactness of the predominant materials in order to achieve safe and efficient foundations.
