Geotechnical study in Montmeló

In Montmeló, the subsoil is characterised mainly by the presence of compacted gravels and sands, which constitute the dominant stratum and favour a high bearing capacity, facilitating the adoption of shallow foundations in most of the town. Fine sands and silts, together with sandstones, conglomerates and flysch, appear frequently, although they generally maintain good levels of compactness and strength. The permeability of these soils is high, associated with the existence of extensive and productive aquifers, which may condition the drainage system and the type of foundation to be used in areas with a high groundwater table.

With regard to seismicity, Montmeló presents a stable setting with only 5 recorded events in the last 30 years and a notably low maximum magnitude (Mmax 1.6), which classifies seismic activity as very low and exempts it from special considerations in structural design. Since the predominant substrate is not clayey, there is no risk of expansivity that could compromise the stability of the structures. Therefore, the main geotechnical limiting factor in Montmeló focuses on managing permeability and ensuring proper control of the groundwater table during execution of the project.
