Types of ground in Estella-Lizarra
In Estella-Lizarra, soils formed by sandstones, conglomerates and flysch predominate, providing a competent foundation with good characteristics for foundations in most areas. In addition, the presence of water bodies and layers of fine sands and silts, as well as occasional materials such as limestones, dolomites and gypsum, creates local variability in bearing capacity, requiring a case-by-case assessment in geotechnical studies. Generalised permeability due to extensive and productive aquifers favours drainage, although stability may be conditioned in areas of gypsum or salts, due to the potential risk of dissolution.
Seismicity in the municipality is very low, with barely one recorded event every 30 years and a low maximum magnitude, which minimises the need for extraordinary measures in seismic design. The absence of an underlying clay stratum eliminates the risk of expansive soils in the area. However, the presence of materials susceptible to karst, especially in limestones and gypsum, makes it essential to check for cavities or evidence of dissolution before executing any foundation, since this is the main geotechnical constraint in Estella-Lizarra.
Sandstones, Conglomerates and Flysch
Sedimentary rocks formed by the cementation of fragments of other pre-existing rocks. They include sandstones (cemented sand), conglomerates (cemented gravels) and the rhythmic alternation of sandston
