Geotechnical study in Canet de Mar

In Canet de Mar, the dominant substrate is mainly composed of granite, gneiss and other igneous rocks, accounting for almost 70% of the municipality’s geotechnical base, together with sections containing fine sands and silts. These lithologies offer high bearing capacity, which creates favourable conditions for direct foundations and shallow spread footings, provided that the integrity of the rock mass is verified and that there are no significant alterations. Fine-grained sediments may require additional local studies to rule out compaction problems or potential differential settlements.

Seismicity in Canet de Mar is very low, with only 4 events recorded in the last 30 years with a maximum magnitude of 3.5, which contributes to a low seismic risk for structural design. The non-clayey substrate removes concern about ground expansivity, allowing attention to be focused on the local variability of the lithology and the presence of possible groundwater levels. In this way, the main geotechnical consideration for the municipality is related to the heterogeneity and compaction of the granular ground in combination with the underlying igneous rock.
