Types of ground in Santanyí

In Santanyí, the predominant materials correspond to expansive white and soft clays, as well as to limestones, dolomites and marbles, with occasional fine sands, silts and compact gravel deposits also present. This lithological variety creates very diverse conditions for the bearing capacity of the ground and foundation solutions, highlighting the good strength of the limestones and dolomites compared with the lower bearing suitability of the soft clays and silty sands. It is essential to carefully select the support level, prioritising the most competent strata, and to carry out a detailed analysis in view of the possible appearance of gypsum, anhydrites and salts, which may involve a risk of dissolution and affect the stability of the foundation.

With regard to additional geotechnical constraints, Santanyí has moderate seismicity, with 24 events over 30 years and a maximum magnitude of 3.2; although this is relevant, it is not usually determining in the area. The presence of karstification in carbonate materials makes it necessary to verify the existence of cavities or underground voids before any foundation work, as it can strongly compromise structural stability. As the bedrock is not clayey, the risk of expansivity is ruled out as the main factor; therefore, controlling and studying the possible development of karst becomes the key constraint in the geotechnical study in Santanyí.
