Types of ground in Jérica
In the municipality of Jérica, soils are predominantly composed of limestones, dolomites and marbles—materials that are very common in the area and are known for their high bearing capacity, which facilitates the adoption of shallow foundations in numerous cases. Gypsum, anhydrite and salts are also present, to a lesser extent, as are sandstones and conglomerates in certain areas. The significant presence of gypsum and salts indicates possible risks of dissolution, especially under conditions of seepage of groundwater, which may affect the long-term stability of the foundations.
From a geotechnical standpoint, seismicity in Jérica is moderate, since 22 events have been recorded over the last 30 years, although with a low maximum magnitude (Mmax 2.7), so it does not represent a notable threat to foundation design. The absence of an overlying clayey substratum eliminates concern regarding expansive soils. However, given the karstic nature of the subsoil, the existence of cavities or dissolution must be verified before undertaking any type of foundation, as this is the main technical constraint to be considered in geotechnical studies in the area.
