Types of ground in Calanda
In Calanda, the subsurface is dominated mainly by gypsum, anhydrite and salts, which account for 43% of the soils and, together with the lesser presence of limestones, dolomites, marbles, sandstones and conglomerates, form a complex geotechnical environment. Gypsum, anhydrite and salts may be subject to dissolution processes, increasing the risk of subsidence or long-term instability, which in turn conditions the design and the type of foundation to be used. In addition, these mineral formations typically show low permeability at the surface, although they may host aquifers at depth, which can affect the water–structure interaction.
The area is characterised by high seismicity, with more than 150 events over 30 years and a recorded maximum magnitude of 4.7, meaning that the seismic parameters must be incorporated into any structural and foundation design. On the other hand, the absence of an clayey substratum eliminates the risk of expansive heave; but given the predominance of karstic materials, it is essential to verify the presence of cavities or dissolution processes before constructing foundations. The karstified nature and the possibility of dissolution constitute the main geotechnical constraint for the municipality.
