Types of ground in Borriol
In Borriol, limestone, dolomite and marble substrates predominate, with a significant presence of sandstones and conglomerates. These lithologies typically offer a high bearing capacity and favourable behaviour for shallow foundations, particularly in areas where the formations occur in massive and compact form. The occasional presence of compacted sands, silts and gravels facilitates shallow foundation solutions, although it is important to verify the homogeneity of these layers. In addition, the extensive network of aquifers, characterised by high permeability, may imply the need to study the groundwater level and the aggressiveness of the water towards the foundation materials.
Local seismicity is notable, with 92 documented events over the last 30 years, although the maximum magnitude value (Mmax 2.3) is low, so seismic effects in structural design are generally minimal. Owing to the predominance of carbonate materials, there is a risk of karst processes; therefore, it is essential to check for the possible existence of cavities or dissolution before carrying out any foundation work. On the other hand, the non-clayey bedrock rules out the presence of risks associated with expansivity. Overall, the main condition to investigate will be the existence of karstification in the ground, given its high incidence in limestones and dolomites in the area.
