At Atzeneta del Maestrat, the dominant bedrock corresponds to limestones, dolomites and marbles, which represent more than 75% of the surface geological territory. These compact rocks favour a good bearing capacity for shallow (direct) foundations, although their high permeability may require specific analyses depending on the groundwater level and possible fluctuations. The minor presence of sandstones and conglomerates scarcely influences the overall behaviour, except in very specific areas, while the extensive network of aquifers requires the study of the possible interaction between foundations and underground flows.

Seismicity in the area is very low, with only 2 events in the last 30 years and a maximum recorded magnitude of 1.9, which makes it possible to rule out relevant seismic constraints for structural design. However, given the predominance of carbonate formations, verification of karst-related phenomena is essential before carrying out foundations, as the possible presence of underground voids may jeopardise stability. The risk of expansiveness is ruled out due to a non-clayey substratum; the main geotechnical constraint is therefore the characterisation and control of the karst in the project area.
