Types of ground in Almenara
In Almenara, the most common geotechnical substrate is formed by fine sands and silts, which represent a significant fraction, with a secondary presence of limestones, dolomites and marbles, as well as compact gravels and sands. These materials generally provide favourable bearing capacity for construction, although in localised points gypsum, anhydrite and salts may be found, which implies a risk of dissolution and must be specifically assessed in the studies carried out prior to foundation works. The existence of expansive clays, although only occasionally and in a small percentage, is ruled out as a fundamental conditioning factor since the main substrate is not clayey, allowing greater flexibility in the design of foundations.
Seismic activity in the municipality is very low, with only 6 events over the last three decades and a maximum recorded magnitude of 2, so seismic risk may be considered negligible in structural analyses. However, given the karstic nature associated with the limestones and dolomites, it is essential to carry out a detailed check for the possible presence of cavities or dissolution prior to executing any foundation. The main limiting factor for the geotechnical study in Almenara lies in assessing the karstic risk and the presence of gypsum, which can undermine the stability of foundations if they are not identified and treated appropriately.
