In Vilanova i la Geltrú, limestone, dolomite and marble substrates predominate, followed by overconsolidated clays and marls and, in smaller proportions, compact gravels and sands. These types of ground conditions usually provide good conditions for supporting foundations, due to their high bearing capacity and low deformation index. However, since these are carbonate formations, it is essential to assess the existence of cavities or dissolution that may be present, particularly during the foundation design phase.

Local seismicity is moderate, with 20 events over 30 years and a low maximum magnitude (Mmax 1.7), which implies that seismic risk in the area is low. Nevertheless, given the presence of calcareous and dolomitic rocks, the potential for karstification should be checked in detail before carrying out any type of foundation, as underground cavities can modify the geotechnical behaviour. The absence of clay in the substrate rules out problems related to expansivity; the possible development of karst is therefore the main conditioning factor in the geotechnical assessment of the area.
