Geotechnical study in Villacarriedo

In Villacarriedo, the dominant soils correspond to sandstones, conglomerates and flysch, which make up more than half of the near-surface substrate, generally providing good bearing capacity and facilitating conventional shallow foundations. In a smaller proportion, limestones, dolomites and marbles may present zones of high strength, although their nature may also be associated with discontinuities and cavities. The low, non-significant presence of fine sands and silts implies a low risk of differential settlement, with the typical scenario being suitable for traditional foundations, unless areas of alteration or made ground are located.

With regard to seismicity, Villacarriedo presents very low seismic activity, recording only one event over thirty years with a maximum magnitude of 3.4, so the seismic risk is negligible for normal design. However, special attention must be paid to the possible development of karst in the carbonate formations, as its existence may compromise the stability of the foundations; specific verification is essential before executing any project. The absence of risk due to expansivity, as it is underlain by a non-clayey substrate, reinforces the control and analysis of the possible presence of karst as the main conditioning factor.
