The truth is I had no idea what a geotechnical study was; I just knew the council asked for it for the project. They explained everything to us with a lot of patience (I asked a thousand questions).

Types of ground in Vault

In Bóveda, the subsoil is composed mainly of slates and schists, which gives the ground a nature of low permeability and variable strength. This type of substrate usually limits the bearing capacity due to its foliated structure, making a careful assessment advisable in order to determine the suitability of the foundation type, although localised compact gravels and sands may provide better conditions for point support. Limestones and dolomites, although less frequent, may show localised areas with better geotechnical characteristics, but their presence is not dominant in the area.

Seismicity in Bóveda is very low, with three recorded events over 30 years and a maximum magnitude of 2.1, so it does not represent a relevant constraint in structural design. There is no evidence of karstification or significant presence of expansive clayey soils, since the predominant substrate rules out this risk. In conclusion, the main aspect to consider in the geotechnical study of Bóveda is the foliated nature and the low permeability of the slates and schists, which can influence foundation behaviour.
