Types of ground in Trujillo
In Trujillo, the ground is dominated by the presence of slates and schists, metamorphic materials with very low permeability and appreciable compaction, which gives the soil a medium to good bearing capacity and makes it possible to carry out shallow foundations in most of the plots. Sandstones and conglomerates, present in a much smaller proportion, may provide localised variability in soil strength, although they are usually also suitable for supporting structures. The existence of superficial aquifers is possible, but the low overall permeability limits problems related to seepage or extraordinary drainage during the foundation stage.
Seismicity in the municipality is moderate, with 29 events over 30 years and a maximum magnitude of 4.4, placing Trujillo in an area where seismic risk should be assessed, although it does not represent the main constraint for structural design. The non-clayey substratum eliminates the possibility of expansive soils, facilitating the selection of more conventional foundation solutions. Overall, the main factor conditioning the local geotechnical studies is the metamorphic nature of the ground, characterised by low deformability and reduced permeability.
Phyllites and schists
Metamorphic rocks characterised by their foliation (parallel planes of weakness or slaty cleavage). Very common in Galicia, Asturias, the north of León, Extremadura and Sierra Morena. They are highly
