Types of ground in Campo de Criptana
In Campo de Criptana, a substrate of limestones, dolomites and marbles predominates, which habitually provides a good bearing capacity for shallow foundations, provided that the ground is intact and does not present significant discontinuities. Compacted gravels and sands are also identified, which are occasionally useful for bearing supports, although the presence of shales, gypsum, anhydrite and salts may require a particular assessment due to the potential risk of dissolution and differential settlements. It should be especially noted that locally occurring silts and peats are extremely compressible and must be avoided as a foundation level.
Seismicity in the municipality is high, with 174 events recorded over the last 30 years and a significant maximum magnitude (Mmax 5.1), so the seismic response must be integrated into the structural design. In addition, the existence of a risk of karstification in the carbonate formations implies the mandatory need to check for the possible presence of cavities before carrying out any foundation work. Given the non-clayey substrate, the risk of expansivity is ruled out, with the prevailing constraint being the dual problem of significant seismicity and potential karstification.
