Types of ground in Arnedo

In Arnedo, sandstones, conglomerates and flysch predominate; these materials generally offer good bearing capacity and stable behaviour under loads. Localised areas of compacted gravels and sands can equally provide good conditions for foundations, whereas the occasional presence of fine sands and silts should be assessed in terms of their potential compressibility. Although the proportion of limestones, dolomites and marbles is low, the occasional appearance of gypsum, anhydrite and salts introduces the possibility of dissolution processes, which may compromise the integrity of the foundations if the ground is not studied appropriately. Given the scarce presence of silts or peats, these levels usually do not represent a direct drawback, and the generally low permeability suggests a limited influence of shallow aquifers on the foundations.

With regard to geotechnical risks, seismicity in Arnedo is considered high, with 200 events over 30 years; therefore, any building project must incorporate this factor into the structural design. The potential existence of karstification, associated with the carbonate formations and the presence of gypsum, requires specific verification before the installation of foundations, to avoid unexpected subsidence. The risk of expansivity is ruled out due to the predominantly non-clayey substrate. In this context, the most relevant constraints for any geotechnical study in Arnedo are the assessment of karst, the influence of soluble materials and anti-seismic design.
