Types of ground in Argoños

In Argoños, rocky substrates formed by limestones, dolomites and marbles predominate, accounting for more than 70% of the soils in the municipality. These materials provide a high bearing capacity for foundations, which facilitates the design and execution of structures. The secondary areas feature fine sands and silts, as well as a localised presence of white/soft expansive clays; however, the latter do not constitute the dominant substrate and, therefore, their influence is limited. It is important to avoid masses of water and saturated or poorly consolidated soils as a support level due to their low geotechnical competence.

Seismicity in Argoños is notable, with 145 events in the last 30 years, although the maximum recorded magnitude (Mmax 4) remains within moderate ranges and should be taken into account for structural design. The municipality has no risks associated with karst processes. In addition, the main non-clayey substrate rules out the danger of significant expansivity, which simplifies foundation design. The main geotechnical constraint will be the precise identification of competent materials and the control of shallow groundwater in areas with local aquifers of low permeability.
