Types of ground in Alfoz de Lloredo
In Alfoz de Lloredo, limestones, dolomites and marbles predominate, which implies that the subsoil is fundamentally rock and has high bearing capacity, making it suitable for shallow foundations. Areas with sandstones, conglomerates and flysch are also representative, providing good mechanical conditions, although their lithological variations must be recognised. Minor deposits of fine sands, silts and expansive clays are uncommon, but if found they require assessment to avoid differential settlement.
The seismic activity recorded in the municipality is notable, with 145 events in the last 30 years, although with a moderate maximum magnitude (Mmax 4). The presence of carbonate materials presupposes the possibility of karst development, so it is essential to verify ground stability thoroughly and rule out subsurface cavities before designing any foundation. The risk of expansivity is ruled out as it involves a non-clayey subsoil, with the possible development of karst being the main geotechnical constraint for the area.
