Types of ground in Zurgena
In Zurgena, the predominant subsoil is made up of fine sands and silts, accompanied in smaller proportions by limestones, dolomites, marbles, slates, schists and compact gravels. This lithological regime indicates the existence of a generally competent foundation base, although it will be essential to identify the presence of levels of loose silts or sands, as these may adversely affect bearing capacity and the stability of shallow foundations. The close presence of aquifers and the moderate permeability of the ground require special attention to the design of the drainage system to avoid moisture-related problems and inflow of groundwater at the works.
The seismic activity in Zurgena is moderate, with 34 recorded events over the last 30 years and a maximum magnitude of 3.3, remaining below thresholds of significant structural concern. Since the subsoil is essentially non-clayey, the problem of expansive soils is ruled out, which facilitates the design of safe foundations. The main conditioning factor in the area is the heterogeneity of the materials and the possible slowdown due to water-bearing levels, highlighting the need for a detailed geotechnical study prior to the start of any work.
