Types of ground in Zuera
In Zuera, compact gravels and sands predominate, followed very closely by formations of limestones, dolomites and marbles, which provides a robust base with good bearing capacity performance for buildings. These characteristics habitually allow the use of shallow, direct foundations, except in areas where gypsum, anhydrites and salts occasionally crop out—materials that may present problems of dissolution. The occasional presence of fine sands, silts and sandstones requires point-by-point attention, although the general conditions are favourable for foundation design. Exploitation of the local aquifers is feasible owing to their high permeability and productivity.
Seismicity in the Zuera area is classified as notable, with 68 events recorded every 30 years and a maximum magnitude (Mmax) of 4.8, which makes it necessary to integrate seismic criteria into any structural design. Given the geological variability of the municipality, there is also the possibility of karst in the carbonate substrates, so it is essential to carry out specific checks before executing the foundation to avoid future settlement or instability. The non-clayey substrate rules out risks related to expansivity, with karst-related phenomena being the main factor conditioning the feasibility of the works.
