Types of ground in Zalabí Valley
In Valle del Zalabí, the dominant geological substrate is formed by phyllites and schists, which constitute approximately 60% of the surface, accompanied by compact gravels and sands that represent 22%. These lithologies generally exhibit significant strength and low deformability, which favours the ground’s load-bearing capacity and allows direct foundations to be designed for use, except in specific areas with finer materials such as fine sands and silts, which are present only occasionally. The low permeability of the predominant formations also contributes to the stability of the substrate for structural support.
Seismic activity in the municipality is very low, with only eight events over thirty years and a maximum magnitude of 1.8, so seismicity does not represent a relevant constraint in design. However, since there is potential for karst activity in the area, it is essential to verify the existence of cavities or instabilities associated with karst before carrying out any foundation work. Assessment of karst development is the main factor to consider in local geotechnical studies.
