Types of ground in Villatobas
In Villatobas, the geological substrate is composed mainly of sandstones, conglomerates and flysch, together with a significant proportion of limestones, dolomites and marbles. These materials usually provide a good bearing capacity for foundations, although the occasional presence of gypsum, anhydrite and salts may introduce risks due to dissolution and loss of stability in shallow foundations. Similarly, although they are rare, white or soft expansive clays could locally compromise ground behaviour, which is why it is necessary to verify the presence and distribution of these horizons before selecting the foundation type. At depth, important aquifers may be found, although surface permeability is generally low.
Seismicity in Villatobas is very low, with barely 5 events every 30 years and a maximum magnitude of 3.9, so it does not represent a relevant constraint when designing structures. However, the local development of karst phenomena associated with limestones and dolomites makes it necessary to check for cavities or unstable areas before building any structure. In addition, particular attention should be paid to the possible presence of locally predominant expansive clays, as they can represent a significant structural risk, especially in areas with climatic conditions that favour their instability. The most determining factor is therefore the need for an exhaustive geotechnical study to identify areas with active karst processes or expansive soils.
