Types of ground in Villar del Rey

In Villar del Rey, substrates of slates and schists predominate, representing more than half of the materials present in the area. This type of metamorphic rock generally confers the ground with a relatively high bearing capacity, although it is important to assess its degree of fracturing and weathering in the field, as it may behave heterogeneously under load. Fine sands, silts and conglomeratic materials appear only occasionally, complicating the uniformity of support if interbedded soft horizons develop. It is recommended to verify locally the compactness and continuity of the ground, since the low presence of granular soils and igneous formations strengthens a shallow foundation if it is founded on the rock mass.

Seismic activity in Villar del Rey is very low, with a small number of events and magnitudes that do not exceed Mmax 1.7, which minimises the seismic impact for structural design. There is no evidence of karstification or of risks associated with expansivity, since the predominant substrate is not clayey. Therefore, the main constraint in geotechnical studies will be the accurate characterisation of the degree of alteration and fracturing of the slates and schists, thereby ensuring a safe and durable foundation.
