In Vilalba, slate and schist substrates predominate, representing more than 65% of the surface, which gives the area relatively compact but fractured subsurface conditions. These materials generally exhibit good bearing capacities, although they require a detailed verification of their degree of weathering and fracturing to define the most suitable foundation type. Granite, gneiss and igneous rock outcrops are also found, to a lesser extent; these can increase ground strength, whereas fine sands and silts, although occasionally present, may locally reduce bearing capacity and demand a detailed analysis of their density and compactness.

Seismicity in Vilalba is moderate, with 21 events over 30 years and a maximum magnitude of 2.5, which does not constitute a severe constraint for structural design from a seismic point of view. No karst risk is detected and there is no problem of expansiveness, as the substrate is not clayey, thereby ruling out harmful volumetric deformations associated with expansive soils. The main factor to consider in geotechnical studies will therefore be the heterogeneity of the substrate and the possible presence of superficial aquifers, requiring suitable characterisation to ensure the stability of the foundations.
