In Vélez-Blanco, the predominant geological substratum is composed of limestones, dolomites and marbles, characterised by high competence and good bearing capacity, which favours direct foundation solutions on sound rock. Areas with fine sands, silts and, to a lesser degree, slates, schists and hard soils of overconsolidated clays and marls are also present; these can reduce bearing capacity and require specific treatments in the geotechnical study to ensure stability, especially in the presence of shallow groundwater levels in localised areas.

The municipality’s seismicity is moderate, with 40 recorded events over the last 30 years and a maximum magnitude of 4, which does not impose any special structural requirements, but does justify its analysis in sensitive projects. In addition, given the significant presence of carbonate formations, the possible existence of karst is a relevant conditioning factor; it is recommended that it be specifically verified before defining any type of foundation. The substratum is not clayey, so the risk of expansivity is ruled out. The main technical challenge in Vélez-Blanco is the necessary investigation of the karst, which can influence foundation safety in a decisive way.
