Types of ground in Valdemoro
In Valdemoro, limestones, dolomites and marbles predominate, which is often reflected in a good bearing capacity for shallow foundations, although levels of gypsum, anhydrite and salts are also present, which may entail risks of dissolution and subsidence. Areas of compacted gravels and sands provide favourable conditions from the point of view of stability, whereas the rare but significant presence of expansive white or soft clays implies that detailed characterisation of the ground on the plot is essential, as these clays tend to undergo volumetric changes that can seriously affect foundations.
Seismicity is very low, with only 3 events in 30 years and a maximum magnitude of 2.6, so it is considered a secondary factor for the structural design of the municipality. However, it is fundamental to verify the presence of karst before designing any foundation, due to the high percentage of carbonate bedrock and the frequency of gypsum and salts, which increase the propensity for dissolution phenomena. In addition, the existence of areas with dominant expansive clays constitutes the main constraint for building projects, requiring exhaustive geotechnical studies to design safe solutions that are adapted to the risks present.
