Types of ground in Úbeda
In the municipality of Úbeda, formations of limestones, dolomites and marbles predominate, accompanied to a lesser extent by sandstones, conglomerates and flysch. These stone materials form a high-strength substratum with good bearing capacity for foundations, although the occasional presence of gypsum, anhydrite and salts implies a potential risk of dissolution, making careful assessment necessary in these areas. The generally low permeability of the ground favours stability, although shallow aquifers may occur in certain zones.
Local seismicity is considered high, with around 200 events recorded over 30 years, although the maximum magnitude observed (Mmax 4.2) does not require severe structural constraints. It is important to note that the karst environment should be carefully verified before defining the type of foundation, given the possible existence of cavities. On the other hand, the absence of an clay substratum rules out the risk of expansiveness, leaving as the main constraint the characterisation of the karst and the possible impact of gypsum or salts.
