Types of ground in Tuéjar
In Tuéjar, the predominant geological substrate is composed of limestones, dolomites and marbles, accompanied by significant proportions of deltaic silts and peats, as well as gypsum, anhydrite and salts in smaller amounts. These carbonate formations habitually provide a good bearing capacity, which favours the feasibility of shallow foundations provided that their appropriate characterisation is ensured. However, the occasional presence of gypsum and salts implies a risk of dissolution and subsidence that must be taken into account when selecting the foundation type, whereas the soft deposits of silts and peats should be avoided as a bearing level due to their low capacity and high deformability.
With regard to seismicity, Tuéjar shows very low seismic activity, with only about 6 events in the last 30 years and a maximum magnitude of 2.3, which implies minimal relevance in structural design calculations. However, the karstified scenario associated with the carbonate materials makes it necessary to rigorously check for the existence of cavities or dissolution phenomena before carrying out the foundations. The non-clayey substrate rules out expansivity risks, so the main condition to assess in local geotechnical studies is karstification and the risks associated with the dissolution of gypsum and salts.
