Types of ground in Tremp
In Tremp, the predominant geotechnical substrate is mainly made up of sandstones, conglomerates and flysch, which account for approximately half of the ground, providing adequate bearing capacity for most standard foundations. White or soft expansive clays are also frequently encountered, as well as other materials present in smaller proportions such as limestones, dolomites, marbles, gypsum, anhydrite, salts and, to a lesser extent, granite and gneiss. The general low permeability favours stability, although shallow aquifers may locally occur, which must be verified during the geotechnical study in order to correctly define the depth and type of the foundation.
Seismic activity in Tremp is very low, with only 8 events over 30 years and a maximum magnitude of 2.6, which implies a low seismic risk for buildings. Nevertheless, the potential presence of karstic formations, particularly those associated with limestones and dolomites, makes it essential to verify the existence of cavities or solution features before designing any foundation, especially in areas where these materials are detected. The main substrate is not clayey, ruling out risks associated with expansivity, and the main factor conditioning geotechnical studies in the municipality is usually related to the presence of karst processes and, in specific cases, with gypsum and saline soils that are susceptible to dissolution.
