Types of ground in Torre del Bierzo
In Torre del Bierzo, phyllite and schist substrates predominate—metamorphic materials of low permeability that provide adequate bearing capacity for foundations, provided that control of fracturing and weathering is rigorous. The occasional presence of levels of deltaic muds and peats is significant, as these materials exhibit high compressibility and very low strength, meaning it is recommended to avoid using them as a bearing layer in foundations. Sandstones and conglomerates, although less common, can provide good mechanical properties where they crop out.
Seismicity in Torre del Bierzo is classified as moderate, with 10 events over 30 years and a maximum magnitude of 3.1, which does not represent a severe constraint for structural design. The geotechnical study rules out risks of expansivity, since the dominant substrate is not clayey. There is also no risk associated with karst processes in the area. The main constraint on foundations, therefore, will be to identify and avoid the soft soils (muds and peats) that exist locally, ensuring that the structures are founded on the more competent levels.
