Types of ground in Toro

In Toro, the near-surface subsoil is predominantly dominated by sandstones, conglomerates and flysch; these materials provide good bearing capacity for the foundations of structures. Compact gravels and sands, although less frequent, also contribute positively to the ground’s strength. Occasional outcrops of slates, schists and, to a lesser extent, limestones and dolomites, rarely have a significant influence on the feasibility of conventional foundations. Fine sands and silts, due to their low proportion, represent a limited and localised risk, whereas the presence of masses of water indicates the existence of aquifers at depth, generally without direct impact on shallow foundations except in cases of deep excavations.

With regard to additional geotechnical characteristics, Toro has high seismicity, with more than 150 recorded events over 30 years and a relevant maximum magnitude (Mmax 4.5); therefore, the structural design must take into account seismic actions in the calculation of the foundation and the structure. The risk of expansivity is ruled out, since the predominant subsoil is not clayey and there are no indications of karst formations that would condition foundation works. The main geotechnical constraint in Toro is therefore seismicity, and the specific design standards for seismic safety must be complied with for any type of building.
