Types of ground in Tarragona
In the municipality of Tarragona, soils formed by limestones, dolomites and marbles predominate, known for offering a high degree of compactness and strength. These materials, together with the secondary presence of compact gravels and sands, provide favourable conditions for bearing capacity, allowing the execution of conventional shallow foundations in most cases. However, formations of fine sands and silts are observed in occasional proportions, which can locally reduce load-bearing capacity, so their specific identification is recommended during the geotechnical study.
The seismicity of Tarragona is moderate, with 30 recorded events in the last 30 years and a low maximum magnitude (Mmax 2.5), so no significant seismic restrictions are expected in structural design. It is essential to verify the existence of karstic cavities in the subsoil, given the high incidence of calcareous formations; the presence of karst can entail localised instability that must be assessed before choosing the final foundation type. The absence of clayey strata rules out expansivity risks, with the main geotechnical constraint being the possible presence of karst structures and their impact on the integrity of the ground beneath the buildings.
