Types of ground in Tapia de Casariego
In Tapia de Casariego, the ground conditions are dominated by slates and schists, with a very significant presence of 80%, followed by formations of sandstones, conglomerates, flysch, and to a lesser extent, hard clays and silty deposits. These materials are characterised by high compaction and low permeability, providing solid conditions for direct foundation. However, the occasional existence of fine sands and silts must be assessed to avoid areas with possible differential settlements and, in any case, the less competent formations should be ruled out as a support level.
Seismicity in the municipality is classified as high, since around 200 events have been recorded over 30 years, despite the fact that the maximum magnitude observed (Mmax 4.2) remains within moderate values. There is no relevant risk of expansivity, given the predominance of non-clayey substrate. On the other hand, the possibility of karst development must be verified by means of a specific study before designing the foundation, as this factor could compromise long-term stability. Therefore, the potential presence of karstified cavities is the main conditioning aspect for the geotechnical study in Tapia de Casariego.
