Types of ground in Somiedo
In Somiedo, the dominant substrate is mainly composed of slates and schists, materials characterised by low permeability and moderate mechanical strength, which positively influences ground stability and bearing capacity. Limestones, dolomites and marbles occur occasionally; while these lithologies are more competent, they may show heterogeneity at the contact with the slaty materials, requiring a detailed assessment for selecting the optimal foundation type, especially in projects with high load-bearing requirements.
Seismicity in the municipality is very low, with only 9 recorded events over 30 years and a maximum magnitude of 3, so it is not a determining factor in structural design. However, the presence of carbonate lithologies implies a risk of developing karst processes; it is essential to thoroughly verify the presence of cavities or dissolution in the limestone areas before carrying out any foundations. Since the substrate is not clayey, the risk of expansivity is ruled out, and the main geotechnical limiting factor lies in checking for karst in areas with carbonate materials.
