Types of ground in Seva
In Seva, substrates of sandstone, conglomerates and flysch predominate, accompanied by shales and schists, which creates a generally competent geotechnical environment for shallow foundations. Although expansive clays and some levels of limestone or granite appear locally, the bearing capacity is usually adequate for most buildings, although it is always advisable to carry out a specific investigation to determine the possible presence of soft strata. The low permeability of these materials limits infiltration, except where local aquifers exist, which affects the discharge of water and should be assessed in the geotechnical study.
Seva’s seismicity is very low, since only around five minor events have been recorded over three decades, with a maximum magnitude of 2.2, so it does not represent a relevant constraint for structural design. The possibility of karstification in areas with limestone or dolomites, although occasional, requires a prior check before the foundation design to avoid differential settlements or instability. In addition, the non-clayey substrate rules out significant risks of expansivity, focusing geotechnical attention primarily on the detection and characterisation of any possible karstic cavities.
