Types of ground in Sesma
In Sesma, the predominant geotechnical subsoil is made up of sandstones, conglomerates and flysch, which generally provide a competent foundation for shallow foundations, as well as gypsum, anhydrite and salts, which may induce dissolution processes and loss of bearing capacity. In addition, areas with fine sands, silts and episodes of compact gravels are observed, although the latter are less frequent. The presence of overconsolidated clays and marls implies adequate strength for certain structural solutions, but it is essential to avoid founding in areas of masses of water, owing to their low bearing capacity.
Seismic activity in the area is high, with more than 150 recorded events over 30 years and a maximum magnitude (Mmax) of 5.2, so it is essential to incorporate seismic criteria into the structural design calculations for the foundations. Additionally, given the high frequency of gypsum, anhydrite and salts, there is a potential risk of dissolution, which can lead to subsidence. As expansive clays do not predominate, the non-clayey subsoil rules out the risk of expansivity, but the karst potential necessarily requires verifying the existence of cavities before carrying out the foundation. The conditions for karstification and dissolution are the most relevant factor for geotechnical studies in this municipality.
